BARRACUDA, THE ESSENCE OF INDUSTRIAL EXCELLENCE
The DCNS sites welcome and train the future crew of the first Barracuda
Anticipation, expertise, high technology and a full command of system integration are four assets which come together at each one of the sites. At Toulon for example, a team of 20 functional integrators, working on an integration platform, assemble, test and eliminate risks from combat system software and equipment. By carrying out this phase without waiting for the system to be installed on board and tested in dock and at sea, DCNS is able to anticipate risks and gain in efficiency. The Group adopts the same approach, with similar results, to the software system which controls the propulsion, the boiler, the power plant and the ship’s various other systems from an integration platform installed at Cherbourg. At the same time, while the Suffren enters the final straight before its handover, at the ports of Cherbourg, Brest and Toulon, the DCNS teams oversee completion of the quays and other infrastructure needed for nuclear security and the associated through-life support. The Group also trains the submariners, using virtual reality and training simulators. Since September 2015, the Cherbourg site has closely associated the Suffren’s future crew with each step of the construction process. Even before any sea trials begin, the sailors can practice using the modules, equipment, command post and, at the Toulon integration platform, become familiar with the combat systems. Furthermore, DCNS has designed, built and made
available training simulators, mounted on a hexapod, which reproduce every type of movement experienced in such a submarine. Over a two-year period, this intensive onsite training offers a further advantage: the naval shipyard teams put the final touches to the equipment while having direct contact with its future users. This pioneering collaborative approach, initiated from the development phase onwards, enables submariners to benefit from highly advanced ergonomics.
